All of the power metal songs used by this canon are also played in the game world, unless noted differently.
Background:
Raynor's background was that of an unremarkable Federation citizen, until he was forced to witness the horrors of One Year War with his own, young eyes. That shaped his plans for the future - he didn't want to be helpless anymore, but someone who could help others out in times of danger. He joined a police academy, and his good performance during training allowed him to take an additional course in Mobile Suit piloting. After graduating Raynor became a part of a Mobile Suit police response squad, used in case of emergencies. The squad rarely saw action, however, and he spent most of his time doing normal police work, work that he was dissatisfied with - he was tired of the amount of red tape constantly getting in his way, and the corruption of various officials didn't escape his attention. He was on the verge of quitting when a certain event happened...
When looking for new books to read in his favorite shop, Raynor found a strange tome, written in a weird foreign language. Nobody could read the letters, and neither did he - but, somehow, he could understand what's written there. The book's name was the Tome of Wisdom, and it promised a road to self-enlightenment, and with it power, and the betterment of self and everyone around. The book wasn't cheap, but Raynor knew he had to buy it.
The next day, Raynor resigned from his job as a cop, and spent most of his remaining funds on an old, barely-functioning GM without any weaponry. A terrible deal, but he knew what he was doing. For days, Raynor kept working to install the Tome inside the Mobile Suit's cockpit; and when he finally finished, the machine's energy readings spiked and it trasformed into a new form right before his eyes, becoming a giant piece of armor worthy of a hero! Raynor gathered his belongings and embarked on a journey, to seek spiritual enlightenment and find evil to fight rather than wait idly for it to come to him. Little does he know, the matters are not as simple as they initially seemed...
Personality:
Raynor is dedicated to following and mastering the eight virtues described in the Tome of Wisdom. Rather than set rules, these virtues are sets of guidelines, principles one has to understand with one's heart and then follow in spirit, not in the letter. Those principles are:
Valor - be courageous. Don't let fear or hesitation stop you from doing what's right.
Honesty - don't be a lying, two-faced bastard. Wisdom is achieved through truth, not falsehood.
Compassion - help those who need it. Respect all life and don't take it thoughtlessly.
Honor - don't take advantage of the misfortune of others. Treat them with respect.
Justice - keep cool head when judging right and wrong. Don't let vengeance blind you.
Sacrifice - be ready to suffer and take on burdens so others won't have to.
Spirituality - seek enlightenment by understanding yourself and the world.
Humility - take credit where it's due, but don't gloat. Admit your mistakes.
Because his spiritual journey has just begun, Raynor doesn't always manage to live up to these virtues, but he tries hard. He doesn't have a high-and-mighty or preachy attitude about his codex, but if others are interested he's happy to explain it to them, and possibly guide them if they wish to follow it too. Because of the nature of these principles, he often has a philosophical attitude, thinking and talking about concepts bigger than himself. It doesn't take much to spark a debate with him.
Raynor possesses the strong sense of justice, idealism and determination of a typical super robot pilot, but unlike most of them, he's a gentle, calm protector who acts with kindness and respect towards others. That doesn't mean he can't get fired up - his music of choice is energetic and loud, after all, and many of Paragon's commands are voice-activated by yelling - and it especially doesn't mean he's soft. His dedication to the virtue of truth means that if someone acts in a way he disagrees with, he won't hesitate to tell them, though he usually does so in polite terms. He's also seen his share of injustice in his life, but doesn't let it destroy his idealism - he sees himself as a realist who knows well how bad the world is, but still keeps on fighting for the good cause regardless. In reality, though, he's more naive than he sees himself, and can be shaken badly if something goes horribly wrong...
Raynor's two big passions in life are listening to music and reading. His favorite music genre is heroic power metal, and he tends to read books taking place in fantasy worlds or old legends. In a way, this reflects his desire to be the hero and to change the world into a better, more just one, but it's not escapism - rather, it's an inspiration for him to do better in real life. It's worth noting that he has absolutely no talent producing any of those, and any efforts at doing so would be cringe-inducing at best.
Capabilities and Resources:
The Tome of Wisdom enhances Raynor's physical prowess, making him a formidable swordsman (although he's not on the level where you can fight giant robots on foot), and gives him the ability to sense the presence of Shadow Knights when they're in the surrounding area. He's also a good shot and a decent mechanic.
Robot Name: Paragon
Robot Description: Roughly 20 meters tall. Despite its construction being based on a mass-produced Mobile Suit, Paragon is a heavily-armored super robot. It has the power to quickly switch between several different forms (pictures of all of them here), each with different abilities, weapons and color - this ability comes from the Tome of Wisdom and the details of how it works are a complete mystery. Paragon starts with the Fighter, Mage and Bard forms, and gets more of them as its pilot masters their corresponding Virtues. There are some things all the forms have in common, however - they tend to be tanky, focused on armor, parrying and blocking rather than dodging, and all of them have an in-built set of large speakers, which can be used to send powerful soundwaves. Raynor usually uses them to play power metal.
The Tome of Wisdom is Paragon's power source and the robot cannot be activated without the artifact taking its place in the cockpit. It can be safely taken out when the mech is not active, though.
Fighter - this form is focused on physical damage in melee, and wields a two-handed sword with enough power to shatter the ground where it hits. Not much in the vein of special abilities, just pure strength and skill.
Mage - a long-range form that uses energy beams and blasts to scorch the enemies. Has good wide-area attacks, but is a bit of a glass cannon - to compensate, it can create an energy shield.
Bard - wields two strong handguns and is faster than most other forms. The music it plays has special properties, letting it actually buff allies by reinforcing their armor and speed, and it deals actual damage to Shadow Knights in addition to solidifying them.
Terrain Stats:
Land: A
Air: -
Sea: B
Space: A
Robot Name: Steed
Robot Description:
A heavy mecha-sized motorbike, Steed changes colors in the same vein as Paragon but otherwise keeps the same abilities no matter what form the robot is in. Riding it gives Paragon the necessary boost in speed and mobility, and its wheels have extending spikes that can be used for combat. The bike has another speaker built into it, because there's no such thing as overkill. Later the bike gets its own upgrade.
Terrain Stats:
Land: S
Air: - (A in Pegasus form)
Sea: D
Space: C (A in Pegasus form)
Upgrades:
As canon events progress, Paragon gains several additional forms. These are:
Paladin - wielding Fighter's sword in one hand and a strong shield in the other, this is the most defense-oriented form. It can enhance its physical attacks with energy to create a variety of techniques, like shooting beams from its sword or giving it a burning aura.
Druid - this form possesses the ability to temporarily change its shape, stretching or disattaching its limbs or turning into a beast-like form. It's the most flexible and agile of all forms. It can slash its enemies with energy claws.
Tinker - armed with a giant gatling gun and dozens of seeking missiles it can spam from ports on its back, this form brings the dakka to the table. It can also repair other robots.
Ranger - wields double swords, which it can enhance with energy in the same vein as the Paladin and combine together into a bow firing energy arrows. It's a very versatile form, with a good balance between ranged and melee combat, and dodging and tanking.
Shepherd - has the baseline abilities of an old GM and no real weapons to speak of. This form is normally useless, but it has a big significance to the plot of the canon...
The Steed also gets an upgrade - the Pegasus form, which looks the same but lets it fly, turning its exhaust pipe into a jet engine. Pegasus is also sentient and can come at its masters command when called, though it doesn't usually perform other actions on its own.
